Basically, semantics. From a practical
standpoint, it’s the level of concentration of the intoxicating
phytocannabinoid known as Tetrahydrocannabinol (THC).
Cannabis
and hemp are, scientifically speaking, the same plant. They share the
same genus, Cannabis, and the same species, Sativa. Given that they are
the same plant, it’s fair to ask why they’re viewed and treated so
differently.
Cannabis plants with higher concentrations of THC
are referred to as marijuana. Hemp contains very low levels of THC...
generally less than 1%. It does, however, contain high levels of the
non-intoxicating phytocannabinoid Cannabidiol (CBD).
Marijuana is
the intoxicating cousin of hemp. And while marijuana and hemp might
share a species, they are legally and chemically distinct in a
significant way.
At the end of the day, for all their
differences, both hemp and marijuana are indeed cannabis plants... and
we consider cannabis to be “kynd medicine”.
Kyndness is Contagious...
